Engure, latvia, 2024
This landscape, painted en plein air in Engure, Latvia, captures a moment of a typical, yet no less beloved, Baltic summer.
The painting conveys the atmosphere of an overcast, rainy day. Blue sky stretches over the horizon, however, it is quickly filling up with gloomy, scudding clouds, foreshadowing the rapid change in weather so characteristic of our region, where the elements shift every five minutes.
The dark, leaden waters of the sea occupy a significant portion of the canvas, reflecting the volatile sky. Within this serenity, the foreground features a patch of sandy shore, covered with wild grasses and bushes, adding a natural texture.
The central part of the composition consists of two boats, peacefully moored at the pier. Their immobility despite the approaching bad weather symbolizes the unflappability and resilience of the local fishing village. This is a landscape that states: despite the bad weather, life continues, and our boats are safe. The overall atmosphere is one of deep, cherished serenity in a native, stern, but beloved Latvian land.
